Warwick Freeman

b. 1953

No discussion of New Zealand cultural identity can bypass Warwick Freeman such has been his profound and pervasive influence. Since the 1980s, Warwick has created defining symbols of New Zealand identity which are firmly located in a Pacific context. Though quiet, intelligent and elegant in their conception, his works are some of the most important and groundbreaking statements in New Zealand art history.

Warwick was an early member of the iconic Fingers jewellery collective and one of the artists featured in Bone Stone Shell: New Jewellery New Zealand, a Ministry of Foreign Affairs touring exhibition to Australia and Asia in 1988. Since that historically significant exhibition, Warwick has consistently defined a New Zealand approach to jewellery making, both as a practitioner, mentor and advocate. For this, he was recognised in 2002 with an Arts Foundation of New Zealand Laureate and his solo exhibition 'Given' has recently toured throughout New Zealand.
