Tony Lane

With a career that spans more than thirty years, Tony Lane is one of New Zealand’s most respected painters. In1970 Tony attended Elam School of Fine Arts in Auckland graduating with a Diploma of Fine Art. Since this time Lane has exhibited extensively in New Zealand and internationally.

He depicts objects in this paintings that are part of our daily lives; a table with a wine bottle, a chair, a linen cloth, a beaded necklace, a coil of rope; ‘common and garden’ forms which suggest a myriad of cultural, religious and personal meanings. These paintings are visual slow burners, they are in no way fast or faddish, what they are is intelligent and magical, and what they do is keep on confounding expectations

As a painter Lane, reminds us that as Pakeha New Zealanders  we are historically connected to a  larger European and Western cultural context,
something that is often overlooked in the search for a nationalistic identity.
