For three decades Peter Peryer has been exhibiting in New Zealand and overseas. His work is held in the collections of most major art museums here and in several overseas, such as the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris and the Australian National Gallery in Canberra.
His work regularly appears in books and magazines. In September, Auckland University Press are publishing a book on his work called Voices & Echoes. In 1998 he had a major exhibition and publication in Germany called Second Nature. This exhibition toured in Germany and Australia.
Images of his were recently seen on television series The Big Picture, hosted by Hamish Keith.
Peter Peryer has been the recipient of several awards. He has an ONZM for his contribution to photography in this country and a Laureate from the Arts Foundation. He has been a Fulbright Scholar, a grant that enabled him to continue studying his medium in the United States.
Originally a teacher, he has a degree in English and a Masters in Education. Born in 1941, it was not until his 30’s that he took up photography which for many years now has been his sole occupation.
Last year he was awarded the William Hodges Fellowship which enabled him to live in Invercargill for 4 months. An exhibition of 31 images from that time is currently on show at the Southland Museum & Art Gallery.
Peter keeps a journal online. This blog, www.peryer.co.nz not only shows his new work but gives insights to his practice.
