Since graduating in Intermedia from the Elam School of Fine Arts Neil has applied his talent, professionalism and boundless creativity across disciplines to achieve a degree of success that is unrivalled in his field.
His fine art training combined with an early career in museums laid the foundation for Neil's reputation as a designer with strong artistic sensibilities. In 1989 he established Eyeworks Design and Production Ltd and was eagerly sought after by top New Zealand galleries as an exhibition and catalogue designer, a position he continues to occupy in his role as Creative Director of Base Two Ltd, Wellington. Neil is an enormous creative talent and his clean sweep of the 2007 Montana Book Design awards is testimony to this.
More recently he has turned his attention to photography and documentary style investigations of restricted and sacrosanct spaces such as the museum store room, the morgue and underground tunnels. While these expansive photographs satisfy an innate curiosity, Neil's construction of the image evokes an uncomfortable reverence to the space to which we are privy. It is the subtle power and mystery of these images which has propelled Neil into prominence yet again, catching the eye of international artist Damian Hirst who was one of the first to acquire a work for his private collection, followed in rapid succession by a number of public New Zealand art museums.
