Fiona Pardington

b. 1961

Fiona Pardington has been a graceful and elegant presence in New Zealand art since she first won the Visa Gold Award for 'Soft Target' in 1991. Nowdays there are few awards left to bestow upon her; she won the Visa Gold Award again in 1997, the Moet and Chandon Fellowship in 1991-2, the Frances Hodgkin's Fellowship twice (1996 and 1997) and was the inaugural Ngai Tahu Artist in Residence in 2006-7. Since completing a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Elam School of Fine Arts in 1984 she was awarded a Master of Fine Arts (first class honours) in 2003 and is currently working towards a PhD. She has featured in influential national and international exhibitions and is undoubtedly recognised as a leading figure of New Zealand photography.

This roll call of credentials and achievements are evidence of her enduring appeal, from all spectrums of the art world, locally and abroad. She combines a refined and classic aesthetic with a mastery of the 'old-world' traditions of analogue photography (handprinted and toning). This is the basis upon which she creates haunting laments, most recently of museum artifacts which have been lost in the annals of history.
